Writing sexual tension

This weekend, I participated in an all day writers' workshop featuring Leslie Wainger, book doctor and author of the fabulous Writing a Romance Novel for Dummies. I gave a presentation with Blaze author Kira Sinclair about sexual tension.

Do you know what sexual tension is? As a romance writer, this is one of the most important tools in your arsenal. Sexual tension can be described as the sparks and sizzle, the wanting/yearning that occurs between the main characters. It's a tension they cannot give in to because it would complicate their situation, thwart their goals, or make things worse.

It's awareness of each other on every level. It's the thoughts, the eye contact, the yearning to make love, all while knowing that giving in would be an absolute disaster. Not a disaster because of the physical, but a disaster because it would make things worse.

Remember “Moonlighting”? The sexual tension between Maddie and David was off the charts. Likewise, think about Princess Leia and Han Solo. Elizabeth Bennett and Mr. Darcy. What about the new show “Castle” that so many of us like? Sexual tension is the key. We think Richard Castle is sexy, and we think Beckett is nuts for not giving in to her attraction to him.

Think about your favorite romance novels. Think of the tension between the characters, about how you kept turning those pages to find out when the hero and heroine would kiss, when they would make love, and what would happen next. How did that author do that? How did she make you want to keep turning those pages?

In your own writing, think in each scene how you can increase the tension, and use all the senses to do so. Touch, smell, taste, sound, and visuals. Ramp it up and make it sizzle. 🙂 And remember that sexual tension springs from your characters' conflicts, their internal issues, and not simply from you saying they want each other. Instant attraction, without conflict, is not sexual tension. And I mean deep conflicts that spring from who they are and what they want, not arguments because one of them likes the Dallas Cowboys and the other is a Washington Redskins fan. If your characters are arguing simply for the sake of arguing, that's bickering — and it's annoying.

So make sure your characters have goals that are opposing in some way, and then let them want each other. Now try to keep them from acting on that attraction. Yum!

A new project

I'm still working on my Argentinian hero and his lovely jewel thief (does that pique your interest?), and their story is galloping to a close. Soon, I hope to submit it to my editor and wait for her suggestions on how to make it better. I promise you passion and seduction, glorious love, and a gorgeous setting in Buenos Aires and the wine country of Argentina. 🙂

But I also have a new project to work on and I'm excited to share it with you. As soon as this book is done, I'll be working on a novella for publication in the UK. My subject? A sheikh! I can't wait! I still have the next full-length book to write as well, and I've already picked a setting for it. I can't wait to tell you about it, but I'm not quite ready yet! Let's just say it's not a place you usually read about in your Harlequin Presents!

Writing through adversity

I don't really have a lot of words of wisdom on the topic, but it occurred to me this weekend as I had to travel for my grandmother's funeral, attend the funeral, and be with family, that my job as a writer doesn't stop because of adversity.

Of course different events affect people differently. I was more emotional than I thought I'd be when I got to the funeral. Grandma was 78, and she'd been pretty sick. Her passing was expected — and yet the events overtook me and my emotions.

Still, I have a deadline to meet and though I know I could ask my editor for more time if I really, really felt I needed it, I don't feel like this is one of those times. Had it happened closer to my deadline, that would be different.

You have to know what you can do and what you can't. Think about this as you work on your stories. When you get that call that someone wants to publish your book, you are moving into the category of professional writer. Professionals show up for work every day. Treat writing like a job, show up unless you're sick, take vacations when you need them, and take time off for dealing with emotional events like death and divorce. But get back to work as soon as possible because writing is a job and the job must be done.

So this week I'm working hard to catch up, and I have something new I hope to tell you about soon.

A vintage article

I was looking back through some old articles I wrote for my RWA chapter in Hawaii and pulled this one out for you. This article appeared in the Words of Paradise, the newsletter of the Aloha Chapter, in March of 2005. I was not published then. I didn't have an agent, or a submission with an editor at the time. I was simply struggling along and trying to complete a book, just like many of you are now.

I hope it inspires you. I haven't changed a thing from the original.

THE COURAGE TO WRITE

You’re a published author and you’ve been invited to speak to a group of aspiring writers. When asked for the single most important piece of advice you could give, what do you say to that group of hopeful faces? I recently attended a book signing/talk by an author (not a romance author) and I learned a couple of things I’d like to share with you.

First, we need to thank our lucky stars that RWA not only exists, but that we also somehow found our way to its doors and that we keep paying those dues every year, no matter how much we might grumble about the price. It’s worth every penny, and here’s why: RWA provides its members with the kind of information that helps each and every one of us to appear professional and dedicated when we contact, or even meet with, editors and agents. No one who takes the time to faithfully read the RWR each month or to solicit information from the RWA website, from her chapter, or from other RWA members can ever claim not to have at least a rudimentary understanding of the publishing industry.

Do you know, for instance, that you shouldn’t print your queries on hot pink paper or tell an editor that if she wants to know how your book ends, she’ll have to ask for the complete manuscript? Thank RWA for that, because it was crystal clear to me that some of the writers at this event didn’t know these most basic elements of professionalism. In fact, one writer wondered if a dramatic gesture, such as hand-delivering one’s manuscript to the editor of one’s choice, wouldn’t serve to get a foot in the door. Are you as agog at the mere idea as I am? Can you imagine flying to New York, sashaying up to an editor’s office and knocking on her door (assuming you get that far into the magic sanctum)? Worse, can you imagine tracking down her home address and popping up on her doorstep, perfumed pink manuscript in hand? I can certainly imagine the police officers that would escort me to a nice cell afterward. My luck, they’d look nothing like those hunky officers that so frequently populate the world of romance or the cute cops who stroll up and down Waikiki.

But this person really didn’t know that was a big NO-NO and she asked the question in response to the author’s accurate statement that the publishing world is tough to break into. How do you get your manuscript read when it’s only one of many currently making the editor’s office look like a cave littered with paper stalagmites? The short answer is to write the best darned book you can and to keep writing and keep submitting. It’s a glib answer, isn’t it? But it’s the truth, so why argue with it.

And always, always be professional. No fancy stationery or perfumed paper, no box of chocolates or letter from your grandma stating how much she loved your book. Crisp, clean white paper with readable typeface and proper formatting as well as a query letter you’ve sweated over, a synopsis you bled for, and a manuscript that starts with a bang and refuses to let go—that’s what you send an editor or agent, and only after following house or agency rules on what to submit and when. But you already know these things because you got the information in the same place I did.

So what would you tell that group of aspiring writers? Let me stress that this author was entertaining and witty and she answered questions graciously for two hours. She gave us some good information, and she even had fun anecdotes about editors and agents and fellow authors. But her answer to the question disappointed me. She said, “Don’t quit your day job.”

Now it’s not like I don’t understand how tough this business is or how hard it is to keep going when the rejections come pouring in, but it’s not the answer I would have given. I’ve heard this answer many times before, and though I don’t think we as writers should blissfully sail off onto our dream clouds with the idea that everything will work out in the end, I think there’s a better, more hopeful answer. The answer I would give has never been said better than when Winston Churchill said it in 1941: “Never give in. Never give in. Never, never, never, never—in nothing, great or small, large or petty—never give in, except to convictions of honour and good sense. Never yield to force. Never yield to the apparently overwhelming might of the enemy.”

I could have chopped off the last two sentences of that quote, but why? They do apply, with a bit of judicious re-visualizing. The force we must never yield to is the force of our own doubts or the doubts of others. Keep writing. The overwhelming might of the enemy isn’t the power of the editor or agent to refuse our work, but rather it’s the pervasive sense of gloom pressing down on us from the world when we get yet another rejection or find out that someone who’s been writing less time than we have just signed a multi-book contract. Defeat those enemies, don’t give in to doubt, and keep writing. The next book might just be THE ONE. If you give up, you’ll never know.

Who am I to tell you this? No one, except that I speak from experience. I did give up. I had some unreal expectations about publishing, and when it didn’t happen for me as fast as I thought it should, I withdrew. I finally decided it would be easier to find something else to do. How many times do you get your teeth kicked in before you stop waiting for it? It was just too hard and it hurt too much and I quit, for several years it turned out.

But I’m back now and I’m pretty opinionated about some things. I firmly believe that you have to keep writing. Maybe you shouldn’t quit your day job, unless you’re retiring or you have a significant other willing to support you while you write, but I know for sure that you shouldn’t ever quit writing. Take a break if you need to. But don’t quit. Don’t get discouraged and give in to the doubts and fears that threaten to overwhelm you. I can’t remember where I read this quote, but it’s too important not to use it: “What is the difference between a published author and an unpublished writer? The published author didn’t quit.” Write that on a sticky note and tack it to your monitor.

As we listened to the author talk, we gazed at the thousands of books surrounding us in that mega-store. Some people were depressed. How would they ever get their books published when there were already so many out there? But I felt hopeful. If there’s room for that many authors on the shelves, there’s always room for one more. How do we get there? We keep writing. We never, never, never give in. We must have the courage to write and the strength to keep going in the face of overwhelming odds. It’s that simple and that hard. Or, as Winston would say, “Continuous effort—not strength or intelligence—is the key to unlocking our potential.” I think the old boy knew what he was talking about, don’t you?

As I look back on this article, I find it amazing that I said many of the things I'm still saying now. And I can report in all honesty that this attitude worked for me. When I wrote this, I didn't know if it would work out or not. But I was determined not to give in. I'm still determined. 🙂

A new cover, a new book

In case you missed it, I have a cover for Cavelli's Lost Heir! I'm very excited about this cover. I loved my first cover — who couldn't love those abs on that guy, hmm? — but this one is even more special to me.

Cavelli's Lost Heir was my first entry into the Instant Seduction competition last year. Except it wasn't called that, nor was the plot anything like what it turned out to be in the finished book. (The Spanish Magnate's Revenge, renamed Spanish Magnate, Red-Hot Revenge, was my second entry — in the first competition, you could enter more than once; now, that's not the case.)

I loved my Prince Nico, but the heroine was less formed than she needed to be. Essentially, it was a forced marriage plot — but the reasoning for it was far more plot heavy than what it eventually ended up being. In the book due out in January (December in the UK), the story now centers on a past relationship and the secret child that was the result of that relationship.

Oh how I loved writing this book! I was worried about it since it was my second, yet I felt like I'd learned so much through my two revisions on the first book that I plowed through with a greater confidence. It's still a few months until the book hits the shelves, but I'm so excited about it. I think it's a good story and I can't wait to share it with you.

Here's a little snippet. I hope you enjoy.

A knock on the door brought his head up. “Enter.”

“The Prefect of Police has sent a messenger, Your Highness,” his assistant said.

“I will see him,” Nico replied.

A moment later, a uniformed man appeared and bowed deeply. “Your Serene Highness, the Prefect sends his greetings.”

Nico stamped down on his impatience as the man recited the ritual greetings and wishes for his health and happiness. “What is the message?” he asked, somewhat irritably, once the formalities had been observed.

Though it was indeed the Crown Prince’s duty to oversee the police force, it was more a symbolic role than anything else. That the Prefect was actually communicating with him about something filled him with an uncharacteristic sense of foreboding.

Ridiculous. It was merely the awareness of his loss of freedom that pinched at the back of his mind and made him feel uneasy.

The man reached into his inner pocked and pulled out an envelope. “The Prefect has tasked me with informing you that we have recovered some of the ancient statues taken from the museum. And to give you this, Your Highness.”

Nico held out his hand. The man stood at attention while Nico ripped into the envelope.

He expected the sheet of paper inside, but it was the photograph of a woman and child that caught Nico’s attention first. Their faces filled the frame as if someone had stood very close to snap the picture. He recognized the woman almost instantly – the wheat blonde hair, the green eyes, and the smattering of freckles across her nose – and felt a momentary pang of regret their liaison had not lasted longer. His gaze skimmed to the child.

Sudden fury corroded his insides. It was not possible. He had never been that careless. He would never do to a child what had been done to him. He would never father a baby and walk away. It had to be a trick, a stunt to embarrass him on the eve of his engagement, a ploy to get money. There was no way this child was his.

His mind reeled. He’d spent only a short time with her, had made love to her only once – much to his regret. Wouldn’t he have remembered if something had gone wrong? Of course he would – but the child had the distinct look of a Cavelli. Nico couldn’t tear his gaze away from eyes that were a mirror to his own as he unfolded the paper. Finally, he succeeded in wrenching his attention to the Prefect’s scrawled words.

Nico dropped the paper and shoved back from the desk. “You will take me to the prison. Now.”
