Last night, I wanted to watch Romancing the Stone. I haven't seen it in years, so I was good and ready to watch it again. Plus, the hubby has a movie screen and I'd never seen RTS at the movies.
OMG, was it fun. And I realized something while watching it, something that's obvious but that I'd forgotten because I hadn't seen it in so long. The heroines save themselves. First, when Joan Wilder is typing her masterpiece in the beginning, her heroine knifes the bad guy before the hero ever shows up.
And then, though Jack saves Joan from Zolo when they first meet, Joan is quite capable of saving herself and does so in the movie's climactic scene when Zolo is trying to kill her. RTS was released in 1984, so kick ass heroines aren't just a current fad.
Seems as if Hollywood is planning a remake, too. It has the potential to be good — but only if they don't go crazy with the special effects and spend too much time concentrating on those to the detriment of characterization.
Here's the original movie trailer. If you're a fan, what's your favorite scene? (I'm torn between her finishing the book in the beginning and “Joan Wilder? The Joan Wilder? I read your books!”) If you've never seen it, what are you waiting for? 🙂
I have a few. The first, Joan is finishing up her manuscript at the beginning, cries and as she looks for a tissue, only to find sticky notes. (Isn’t that the way it is with us? LOL!)
I love it when she slides down the mud hill and he lands right between her legs. “Whoa, what a morning!”
In the plane with a marajuana fire. “Aww! When did the Doobie Brothers break up?” 😉
Second, “Joan Wilder? THE Joan Wilder? Iz Juanita….” LOL!
LOVE! LOVE! LOVE, this movie!!!
I got the movie for Christmas and it’s been a fave since I saw it in the theaters in 1984. Y’all have named lots of my fave scenes. I also like when she’s picking her way across the delapidated bridge and then swings across. Jack sees her and tries the same only to smack face first into the rocks (which you can see give a little if you watch closely, but of course they’re not going to let Michael Douglas smash face first into a real rock).
I have mixed feelings about a remake. It’s hard to improve on perfection.
I’m still on for the RTS movie night at your place. Just pick a date.

Yep, I love all those moments! I can’t imagine them finding two better actors to play the roles. I’ll see the remake when it comes out, but I can’t imagine it being better than the original.
PM, yes, the bridge! LOL! He’s over there cussing and telling her to take notes because she’s got a real life death scene going on, and she’s on that bridge. And then when he finally gets over there and she’s drinking the miniature — ROFL.
Oh yes, I am still all about the movie night! I’m thinking of ordering the Blu-Ray version of the movie. It’s worth it to me to have it. 🙂
Perhaps a night in March would be good! I hope to be out of the woods with revisions, and well along on Book 3 by then. (snort, I am ambitious, aren’t I?)
One of my fave films, but haven’t seen it for ages. Thanks for reminding me!
I love this movie. Can’t understand why they keep remaking them, though. Why? I just can’t picture it being as good.
My favorite moment? I love all the ones you’ve already mentioned. Maybe the part about his little mule “Pepe.”
