Join me over at Romance Writers on the Journey! Keli Gwyn asks me about The Call, how my life has changed since, and what my advice to writers is for how to prepare for being published. Come on over and ask me a question or make a comment! You'll be entered for a chance to win a seriously cool bookmark!
Come keep me company. ๐
Lynn,
I enjoyed hearing the story behind The Call. Your insider info on how life changes after it comes is powerful stuff. I like your advice to not-yet-published writers to live like professional authors now so we’re ready when our calls come.
And thx for the kind words about the bookmark prize. It’s even nicer than it looks in the picture on your post.
Hi Lynn!
I missed your post on Saturday and am only just catching up now but I did have a belated question…
Did you make a lot of submissions when you started writing again and worked a lot with the feedback from those? Or did you enter more competitions?
Nikki
Hi, Keli! Thanks again for inviting me. Hey, and now that one of my chapter mates won the bookmark, I WILL get to see it if I badger her to bring it to a meeting. ๐
Hi, Nikki! Actually, when I started writing again, I made NO submissions. I kept thinking it wasn’t good enough quite yet, I just needed to tweak this or that. It was the Harlequin contest win that put me over the top, no doubt about it.
And I did submit to a few contests. Probably not more than 5 or 6. But I also *judged* contests, and that helped me to see what people were doing wrong. (And what some were doing right!) I also read a lot of books. Not just romance, but the classics, mystery, non-fiction, etc. I think we soak in good writing by osmosis if we stick with it long enough. ๐
Hi Lynn!
Thanks for answering my question ๐ I’d like to think that we pick up good writing by osmosis too ๐
