She doesn’t believe in heroes anymore. He’ll prove her wrong.

Mercenary Dax Freed would rather stride into the desert naked and covered in honey than pretend to be a reclusive romance novelist’s fake boyfriend, but nobody gave him the option.

Roberta Sharpe writes about heroes for a living, but she already knows they don’t exist in real life. She doesn’t need a former Army Ranger who looks like he could be on her covers camping out in her guest room to prove the theory, but nobody gave her a choice.

When someone breaks into her home and leaves a grisly calling card, her publisher insists she needs a bodyguard. Dax is everything she doesn’t want in her life again. Tall, dark, handsome, and certain of his appeal, it’s almost impossible to ignore the sizzling chemistry between them.

It might not matter, though. The danger lurking in the shadows threatens to ruin more than a chance at love. If Dax is going to save Robbie, he’ll have to unleash the beast within… and prove that heroes don’t just exist in the pages of a novel.

“I shouldn’t have done that,” he said roughly.

“I wanted you to.”

She couldn’t let him take the blame when she’d asked him for it.

“Yeah, but I should know better.”

She didn’t know why that hurt, but it did. He got to his feet and shrugged into his shirt.

Robbie stood. “I should go.”

He raked a hand through his hair. “Yeah, probably a good idea.”

She turned, hurt and frustration warring inside her. She was almost to the door when he caught her wrist and stopped her. Then he pushed her against the wall, caging her in with his muscular body. It ought to frighten her, but it didn’t. If anything, it thrilled her.

“Listen to me, Robbie. I shouldn’t have kissed you, but I fucking wanted to. So damned bad. I want more than that. I want to strip that tank top off your sweet body and suck your nipples until you see stars. Then I want to drag those maddening pajama pants off and suck on your clit before I fuck you into the best orgasm you’ve ever had. I want to do those things, but not because you’re feeling vulnerable or lonely or because I’m convenient. I want you to know it’s me, and I want you to need that from me. Understand?”

Robbie swallowed. The heat and strength of him surrounded her, but he didn’t scare her. “Yes,” she whispered, her body on fire with the desire to be touched.

He took a step back, his eyes pinned to hers. She couldn’t tear her gaze away. Strangely, she didn’t want to.

“Go to bed, Robbie.”

She stood with her palms to the wall, breathing him in, wanting to breach the distance between them and go back to that place of want. But it wasn’t possible. Not tonight.

“Please,” he said roughly. “We’ll talk in the morning.”

“O-okay.” When she was in the hall, she turned around. He was still standing there, still looking impossibly sexy and broody. “I’m sorry, Dax. I shouldn’t have asked you to kiss me.”

One eyebrow lifted sardonically. “I’m glad you did, babe. Next time you ask, better be sure you want everything that comes after.”
